You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone
A diabetes or pre-diabetes diagnosis brings a lot of questions and a lot of noise. Jaime cuts through it. With over 20 years of clinical experience in NYC hospitals and dialysis centers, she's seen how diabetes actually shows up in people's lives, not just in textbooks or in lab tests. As a Registered Dietitian (RD) and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), she knows that what works for one person may not work for another. Your background, your schedule, your cultural traditions, and your lifestyle all play a role in creating your custom nutrition plan.
Understanding Your Diagnosis
What Is Pre-diabetes?
Pre-diabetes is diagnosed when your blood glucose is higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. The important thing to know: it' can be reversed or delayed. Through lifestyle changes - the kind a Registered Dietitian and CDCES can guide you through - it's possible to return your blood glucose to a normal range and delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes altogether.
What Is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition where the body's blood glucose levels are higher than normal, resulting from the body's inability to use or store blood sugar for energy. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer produces insulin, so glucose can't enter the cells to be used for energy. In Type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin, or the body can't use the insulin it produces effectively. In both cases, maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is central to managing the condition - and nutrition plays a critical role in that.
Who We Work With
Jaime provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for:
What to Expect
Sessions are judgment-free, and built around your actual life. Jaime will get to know your eating habits, health history, medications, and goals - and together, you'll build a plan that's realistic and sustainable. People with diabetes need to understand how food and nutrition affect their bodies in order to successfully manage blood sugar. Jaime provides exactly that: clear, practical information and a personalized daily meal plan that accounts for your food preferences, physical activity level, and lifestyle.
Topics covered may include:
Does Insurance Cover This?
Often, yes. Medical Nutrition Therapy for diabetes is covered by Medicare and many private insurance plans when provided by a Registered Dietitian. If you have a diabetes or pre-diabetes diagnosis, you may be entitled to covered visits at little or no cost. Jaime can help you sort out your coverage before your first appointment. Self-pay options are available as well.
RD vs. Nutritionist - What's the Difference?
Not everyone who offers nutrition advice has the same training. A Registered Dietitian holds a Master's degree in nutrition, has passed a national board exam, and holds a legally protected, licensed title. A nutritionist, by contrast, has no standardized certification or required education - and in many states, the title isn't regulated at all. Only Registered Dietitians can provide Medical Nutrition Therapy, work in clinical settings, and bill insurance for nutrition services.
What Makes a CDCES Different?
The Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist credential reflects advanced, specialized knowledge in diabetes prevention and management across every stage of life. A CDCES educates, supports, and advocates for people affected by diabetes - with a focus on self-management strategies that reduce risk and optimize long-term health outcomes. Jaime doesn't just know nutrition. She knows diabetes.
